General Aftercare Principles for All Medical & Cosmetic Tattooing
The success and longevity of your medical and cosmetic tattooing treatments heavily rely on diligent aftercare. Following these instructions precisely will ensure optimal healing, vibrant results, and minimize the risk of complications. Please remember that individual healing times can vary, and I will provide you with specific, tailored instructions during your appointment.
While there are common guidelines, some aftercare details differ slightly between medical and cosmetic procedures, and even by the specific area treated. Pay close attention to the instructions provided for your particular service.
These principles are paramount for successful healing:
- Keep it Clean: Hygiene is your absolute priority. Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching the treated area.
- Avoid Contamination: Keep the tattooed area away from dirt, dust, pet dander, and unwashed hands. Change your pillowcase frequently.
- Do NOT Pick or Scratch: Itching, flaking, or light scabbing are normal parts of the healing process. Under no circumstances should you pick, scratch, or peel at the treated area. This can lead to pigment loss, scarring, and infection. Let any scabs or flakes fall off naturally.
- Avoid Submerging in Water: For at least 7 days, avoid prolonged submersion of the tattooed area in water. This means no swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, long baths, or direct, forceful shower sprays on the area. Quick, gentle showers are acceptable, ensuring you keep the treated area as dry as possible.
- Protect from Sun Exposure: Direct sunlight and tanning beds are detrimental to new tattoos. For at least 4 weeks, avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area. Once healed, always use a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen on the tattooed area to prevent fading and color changes.
- Avoid Harsh Products: Do not apply any skincare products containing harsh chemicals, fragrances, exfoliants (such as AHAs, BHAs, Retinols, Glycolic Acid), or anti-aging ingredients directly on or near the tattooed area for at least 2-4 weeks or until fully healed. These ingredients can cause irritation, affect pigment retention, and accelerate fading.
- Limit Sweating and Strenuous Exercise: For the first 7-10 days, avoid heavy sweating and strenuous exercise. Excessive sweating can push out pigment and introduce bacteria to the healing area.
- Stay Hydrated & Healthy: Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet supports your body’s natural healing processes.
Important note for all treatments:
- Follow MY Specific Instructions: The guidelines above are general. I will provide you with precise, written aftercare instructions tailored to your specific procedure and individual needs. Adhering to these is crucial for the best possible outcome.
- Touch-Up Appointments: Most medical and cosmetic tattooing procedures require a touch-up session (usually 4-8 weeks after the initial appointment) to achieve the perfect the colour, shape, and density. This is a vital part of the complete treatment.
- Long-Term Care: Even after healing, protecting your tattoo from excessive sun exposure with SPF is essential for maintaining its vibrancy and longevity. Certain skincare ingredients can also cause premature fading over time.
- Signs of Infection: While rare, if you experience excessive redness, swelling, increasing pain, pus, foul odour, or fever, contact me and consult your doctor immediately.
